Critical Myth reviewed The Originals series premiere 1.01 Always And Forever

It’s perhaps an understatement to say that the backdoor pilot for The Originals that aired towards the end of the fourth season of The Vampire Diaries was a disappointment.  For some, it was almost bad enough to shelve the idea entirely.  But The CW Network saw it differently, and if this actual premiere episode is any indication, there may be more promise than the backdoor pilot implied.

Ironically, the central plot is effectively the same: Klaus returns to the family’s old stomping grounds of New Orleans and finds it controlled by one of his “children”, Marcel, who is ruling the city and its supernatural population with an iron fist.  Even more than Mystic Falls, the supernatural populations are at each other’s throats, and witches are divided between wanting to protect or destroy when Hayley, a werewolf, turns out to be pregnant with Klaus’ highly unlikely child.

CW President on Vampire Diaries Spinoff: A Focus on Klaus, “Dysfunctional” Originals

By in January 15, 2013 • Filed in: The Originals

The CW President Mark Pedowitz took center stage this morning at the Television Critics Association winter press tour and, as you might expect, spent a portion of his question-and-answer period focusing on that network’s latest big news:

A potential Vampire Diaries spinoff titled “The Originals”.

“The genesis of that came from a conversation with Warner Bros. and Peter Roth,” Pedowitz said. “I’m a big believer if you have something that’s working and you can incubate [it], it’s a good way to get pilots on the air… We’re basically going to go and focus on the Original family.”

And the head of that family, of course, is Joseph Morgan’s Klaus, who viewers will learn in the April 25 TVD episode was a founding father of New Orleans. Pedowitz confirms he will be the lead character, but:

“Hopefully some of his siblings will come along. Klaus is just a great character and the Original family has such great dysfunctional family dynamics, we felt that was a great way to take the show.”

Phoebe Tonkin will will also “be coming on board the spinoff,” the executive  said, adding that he very much wants her part of “The CW family.”

The Originals will be set in contemporary New Orleans and will fit in tonally with The Vampire Diaries.

The CW is looking to take another bite out of the vampire genre with a spinoff of its hit series “The Vampire Diaries.”

The potential spinoff, which will be tested with a backdoor pilot on the April 25 episode of “The Vampire Diaries,” will center on vampire clan the Original family, with “Vampire Diaries” star Joseph Morgan reprising his role as Klaus, an individual familiar with the project told TheWrap on Friday.

On the April episode, Klaus returns “to the supernatural melting pot that is the French Quarter of New Orleans – a town he helped build centuries ago – and is reunited with his diabolical former protégé Marcel.”

“The Vampire Diaries” and “The Secret Circle” actress Phoebe Tonkin is also set to star in the potential spinoff, which is being eyed for next season and bears the working title “The Originals.”

“The Vampire Diaries” executive producer/writer Julie Plec is shepherding the project, and is writing as well as executive-producing. “The Vampire Diaries” executive producer Leslie Morgenstein and “The Secret Circle” executive producer Gina Girolamo will also executive-produce.

Plec is working on the spinoff with Alloy Entertainment, in association with Warner Bros. Television and CBS Television Studios.
