“The Vampire Diaries” may have ended its fourth season on Thursday night, but fans of the hit CW series aren’t weeping. The Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder lead show is set to return in the fall along with “The Originals” spinoff series.

“The Originals” aired its backdoor pilot during the fourth season of “The Vampire Diaries,” and was picked up for Tuesday nights at 8 p.m.in the fall. So, what can fans expect when it airs? Some good ol’ fashion family drama!

Original vampires Klaus (Joseph Morgan) and Elijah (Daniel Gillies) are all set to make the transition to New Orleans come the fall, but one character’s crossover remains a mystery – Rebekah (Claire Holt)! Holt signed on for the spinoff series in February, but the season 4 finale of “The Vampire Diaries” didn’t set her up for the transition.

Earlier this season Klaus’ move to New Orleans was made clear, with the bad boy even taking the time to say goodbye to Caroline during episode 23, “Graduation.” (“He’s your first love,” Klaus says to Caroline of Tyler. “I intend to be your last. However long it takes.” Fingers crossed she goes with him one day!) Elijah also left, bidding adieu to a possible life with Katherine for the chance to reunite his family with Klaus. However, Rebekah never made it clear that she was leaving Mystic Falls to live with her brothers.

In the season finale of “The Vampire Diaries,” fans watched Rebekah and Matt make plans to head off to travel the world post-graduation. The pair talked of visiting places like Italy … but New Orleans was never brought up. So, how will Rebekah end up leaving Mystic Falls? Even Claire Holt doesn’t know!

“Actually, you know, I don’t know what’s going to lead her to New Orleans,” the actress told the Huffington Post. “That hasn’t really been discussed yet. I think we’ll learn at the beginning of the next season how Rebekah makes the transition to the new show.”

Rebekah hasn’t always had it easy with her brothers, especially Klaus. When Rebekah does make the move the reason behind her decision will definitely be a major plot point

“She’s always been loyal to Klaus and she values family above all else, and I think it’s a really hard one for her because she has been betrayed by him, she is disappointed in him and is hurting still,” explained Holt. “The journey in this pilot will revolve around her decision to follow him, help him and remain loyal to the family or leave them behind.”

As for Matt? Holt previously told the Hollywood Reporter that she likes the growth that her character has shown with Matt and hopes that “The Originals” will be able to continue exploring that side of her.

You can catch “The Originals” when it premieres in the fall at 8 p.m. on Tuesdays on the CW.

The Vampire Diaries star Joseph Morgan is ready to say goodbye to Mystic Falls and move on toThe Originals, but says that the door is always open for more Klaus-and-Caroline stories to be told.

On the Season 4 finale, Klaus finally said the words to Caroline (Candice Accola) that she was waiting to hear: “Tyler is now free to return to Mystic Falls.” But this wasn’t Klaus’ way of stating that he was moving on. Instead he added, “He’s your first love. I intend to be your last.”

“[There was] a responsibility for the fans who were rooting for Klaus and Caroline to at least give them some sort of resolve,” Morgan told TVGuide.com at The CW upfront. “That’s not saying it’s the end of that because there’s the potential of crossovers, but to acknowledge that we owed that to them. It was really generous of [the writers] that after all the terrible things that Klaus has done, to give me something where he can come in and save the day.”

Watch the video below for more of Morgan’s take on The Vampire Diaries finale and for scoop onThe Originals, including when he thinks the Original baby will be born:

This interview also contains spoilers for season the 4 finale and season 5!

Stefan is Silas’ doppelganger? Katherine is now human? Bonnie is really dead? These are some of the questions we were asking ourselves at the end of The Vampire Diaries Season 4 finale.

While the hour was more emotional than action-packed, the final minutes proved to be series-changing. Not only did Silas reveal the loophole in his spell would allow himself to become his true face – the original to Stefan’s doppelganger – but he then staked and threw Stefan (Paul Wesley) to the bottom of the lake. Still following? Elena (Nina Dobrev), meanwhile, was about to be killed by her own doppelganger when she grabbed the cure out of her pocket and shoved it down Katherine’s throat, making her mortal. Finally, Bonnie (Kat Graham) lifted the veil, but in the process carried out a spell ensuring her death, but Jeremy’s return to life.

With so many finale burning questions, TVGuide.com went straight to the source, executive producer Julie Plec, who shares her insight below.

So Stefan is a doppelganger of Silas. Could there be more out there? Julie Plec: I suppose it does mean that, but as far as if we plan to introduce that or not? The answer is probably no for now.

How long before everyone finds out that Stefan is really Silas? Plec: Truth be told, I don’t think it’ll be too long. I think that there’s more fun to be played with people learning quickly, but independently of the other so there’s a lot of good bait-and-switch Katherine-style stuff that could happen early in the season. And people that know Stefan well will be able to catch on pretty quickly I would hope.

Can we expect double Paul Wesley scenes? Plec: Part of the fun of having an actor play two roles are those opportunities to put them face to face, but they’re difficult to shoot and they take a lot of time and the stuff we do even with Katherine and Elena we do so sparingly. So we’ll definitely see it, but of course Stefan will be on his own journey presumably at the bottom of the [lake] floor so we’ll see when and who gets him out of that mess.

How did Paul feel about the character arc? Plec: He’s definitely excited. He’s such a good actor, he loves to work and he loves to give everything he has to the role and people who do long-term television series will always jump on the opportunity to spread their wings a little bit.

Can you confirm that Elena was herself and not Silas when she said she was in love with Damon? Plec: Well put it this way, if it wasn’t Elena, then that means Stefan/Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder made out. I think a lot of fans would’ve been happy.

Will Katherine try to have people turn her back into a vampire? Plec: Well, given the rules of how one becomes a vampire on our show – which is if you inject vampire blood and then you die with it in your system -that’s a pretty big risk to take. If it doesn’t work then she’s just dead and I think the one thing she’s constantly going to weigh is, “How much do I hate being human? Am I willing to risk actually dying forever in order to get my vampirism back?”

Can you imagine a time Elena and Katherine could ever find common ground? Plec: You know I actually think that if they ever sat down and had a bottle of wine and a bag of chips they’d probably realize they have a lot more in common than they think. But they have a lot of hate and bitterness and altogether bad blood there so it might take a couple of bags of chips and a case of wine.

Will Elena still struggle with vampire urges in college? Plec: Well I think the bigger issue for her will be protecting her secret. In Mystic Falls we’ve seen it’s hard enough to keep your secret of who you are and what you are and now she’s going out into a whole new location and a new life and living a double life as a human student and a secret vampire. There are going to be some struggles attached to that.

Is it possible that Elena and Damon could be happy together next season? Plec: I think there’s never not going to be a moment where they’re engaged in some kind of conflict because their relationship even as friends and enemies had a volatility that is frustrating and sexy at the same time. So the question is how long can we keep them happy in spite of the things that come up that put them at odds with each other and that will be part of the journey next season is seeing if these two can really make it as a couple

How long before everyone finds out Bonnie is a ghost? Plec: I think she was pretty clear about Jeremy wanting to keep her secret so I guess we’ll see how long he’s willing to do that.

What will her role be next season? Plec: The predicament for Bonnie is that she’s on the other side so she can pop in and see what’s up and who’s doing what. With her relationship with Jeremy she’ll have information that nobody could access, but she doesn’t have the actual ability to do magic or interact with another human so there’s an impotence attached to that that I think will be frustrating for her not to mention the emotional distance of not being able to be right there with your friends even though she’s there they don’t know that she is. So she’s going to struggle a bit in the beginning and that’ll either strengthen or hurt her budding relationship with Jeremy which already has so many obstacles attached to it.

How will Jeremy struggle being human again? Plec: Jeremy will not have a very easy time of it. His first big hurdle is his cover story for being suddenly alive. So he’ll struggle a bit with the return to the normal world.

Where will Matt and Rebekah be when we pick up? Plec: We’ll definitely see them when we start up next season. As far as I know they may even still be in Europe when we find them.

In your mind, will Matt ever be turned? Plec: Truth be told that character has a special place in my heart and all of our hearts because he is, as Rebekah said, so beautifully human, and so I don’t want to mess with that any time soon.

Will there be a time jump next season? Plec: Definitely our intention is to pick up the beginning of the season as everyone is making their preparations to go to college or whatever it is they’re going to do.

Will Tyler be back in the fold full time next season? Plec: We’ll definitely see Tyler (Michael Trevino) again and I think the biggest question is where’s he been what’s he been doing how has it changed his life and can he step right back into the Mystic Falls world or to college easily and what will that mean for his relationship with Caroline.

With Klaus telling Caroline he wants to be her final love, does that mean there’s opportunity for them to actually get to that place? Plec: “You never know” I think is the answer. Right now the biggest hurdle, other than a spin-off separating them, is that he’s done some really vile things and I don’t think Caroline’s in any hurry to jump into bed with someone like that so murderous and violent and manipulative and cruel. And he did, after all, murder her boyfriend’s mother. So I think she definitely has a draw to him and a connection with him that she’s not even necessarily confident is a good thing. His hurdle will be to get her to finally come around, and he goes on his own redemption journey moving forward: Will he become the kind of man she can one day look at the way she looks at Tyler.

Spoiler alert: If you haven’t watched The Vampire Diaries season finale, stop reading now. Exec producer Julie Plec talked to us about who was originally going to get the cure, how long that Silas twist was in the works, and how much of Bonnie we’ll be seeing next season…

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: You’ve told us that the person you thought would end up with the cure when you begin filming the season wasn’t the one who ultimately got it. Who was originally supposed to receive it?
JULIE PLEC: We changed our mind right about when the show started airing. Our original plan was Damon, because we thought that really made the most sense — the person who would probably least like to be human, and yet also missed it the most admittedly. To see Damon in a human life as Elena remained in a vampire life, we got excited about that opportunity. Then, the more we thought about it, the more that people were taking their random guesses at who would get it, it seemed like it was everybody’s first instinct as well. [Laughs] And so we thought we needed a new instinct.

What does it mean for Katherine? Will we see more of her next season to watch her deal with this?
I think we’ll be seeing a bit more of Katherine. As always, we have to be careful with overworking the hardest-working woman in show business, Nina Dobrev. There’s so much fun to be had with seeing this nasty, manipulative, fearless, undefeatable Katherine suddenly finding herself vulnerable, killable. It may be time to pay some of the price for all the crappy things she’s done to other people over the last 500 years.

Will we see her in Mystic Falls or New Orleans?
I think we’ll definitely see her knockin’ on somebody’s door when she’s in a bind. As we know the Salvatore Brothers are pretty good at protecting the ladies, so you never know.

No one saw the Stefan-is-a-Silas-doppelgänger twist coming. I think we’re all excited for Paul Wesley to play that part.
Yes.

What was the inspiration?
When we were talking about who the next big bad villain should be, we had kind of a double burden because we’d just come off two of the greatest villains of all-time, Katherine and Klaus, which also turned out to be excellent casting choices. Trying to live up to that and better it, is something that we talked about that would be very difficult, and that just got us thinking outside the box. What could we do to create an interesting supervillain but not necessarily have it be so contingent on the perfect piece of casting? So it started there, and combined with our desire to give Paul Wesley the ability to play and to be adventurous with his acting. He’s so good at playing the bad guy and we didn’t want to take Stefan down the Ripper road again. So we were trying to think of ways to give him something juicy to sink his teeth into, no pun intended. And so those two conversations led to that solution.

And when did you land on that answer?
We knew that last spring when we first started talking about this season. It was where we were heading all season long. We weren’t sure if we were going to get to it sooner than we did. We had it in our back pocket to reveal as soon as we felt it was time. And then it turned out not to be revealed until the finale.

Is Stefan going to be buried for a long time?
We’ll have to see. Certainly no one’s gonna want to watch The Vampire Diaries without their Stefan alive and well and hangin’ out. So we’ll try not to prolong the torture for too long, but it is gonna be torture. So it will definitely change him. If and when he finally gets free, he’s not necessarily gonna come out of there all sunshine and rainbows.

The water coming into the coffin was a nice touch: It’s one thing to be buried alive, but to be buried alive in water — horrifying.
I mean, how awful when you think about it. He can’t be killed by it. He’ll inhale the water, he’ll go unconscious, he’ll come back to consciousness because he can heal himself, and then he’ll drown all over again. [Laughs] It kinda sucks.

And what’s he gonna look like when someone finally finds him?
What does a desiccated vampire look like in an underwater coffin? I guess he’s like a pickle. [Laughs] Yeah, we probably won’t linger too much on that image.

And we’ll see Silas as Stefan now, as opposed to other people?
He’s still psychic, so he can still do what he wants to do and appear how he wants to appear. Definitely now he’s got a body that he can inhabit pretty safely, and I’m sure it’s a lot easier to just walk around as his normal self than having to use up all that energy trying to convince people he’s someone else. So I think more often than not, we’ll see him as Paul Wesley.

So is it like the Curse of the Sun and the Moon where everything we thought we knew about Silas’ motivations was wrong? Did he actually want to take the cure and die to be with someone?
His definite agenda is to rid himself of the curse of immortality. An immortal life without somebody that you love is kind of its own worst torture and punishment. Yet, he cannot be killed, and now that Katherine has taken the cure, and there was only one, he can’t have the cure. So we’ll start to see what he wants the next step of his existence to be and how he’s going to find ways to achieve this.

Is he the Big Bad for next season?
He’s A bad. He’s certainly by no means the only villain, and not necessarily even the most dastardly.

Are we going to see a new witch?
[Laughs] Put it this way: It will be awfully nice to write the show without any witch spells for a little while, but I’m sure there’ll be another witch in Mystic Falls before time is up.

Did you start the season knowing that you were going to end it with Bonnie dying?
Interestingly enough, that was a pitch that was on the table for the finale last year. For us, it’s always been a question of how much we want to show of the other side. And is there an entire world that we can play over there, or do we really want to keep everything grounded in a real world universe. Having Jeremy able to see ghosts and now Bonnie over on the other side, it felt like an exciting complication to a budding romantic relationship that we were looking forward to playing in that. And also relieving ourselves of the burden — as Kevin [Williamson] calls it, the witch storytelling burden — which is that when you have a witch, they should be able to fix all the problems, but if they could fix all the problems, then you’re not telling the story. But if they can’t fix the problems, then they’re really bad witches. [Laughs] So it’s a nice relief from that for a while.

How much will we see of Kat Graham next season?
She will be a regular. She will be around. If anything, we’ll see as much if not more of her. And it gives us a great way to develop more stories for her outside of just her being the witch that comes in and tries to save the day. I’m excited about the opportunity to tell a romantic relationship between two people who can’t physically be together. Talk about your hurdles.

And Tyler can come back to town now. Klaus’ line to Caroline — “He’s your first love. I intend to be your last. However long it takes” — was perfect.
That scene is so special and so beautiful. And the crazy thing about Klaus and Caroline is here’s a guy who’s done hideous, horrific, unforgivable things, and yet, here we all are swooning as he takes her arm and escorts her off the football field. [Laughs] So that’s a pretty special situation to have in a villain/leading man, which hopefully will continue to be successful in the other show.

Let’s of course start off this “Vampire Diaries” article with a warning, given that we are still not that far removed from the season 4 finale airing on The CW last night. If you want to avoid any and all spoilers (or you are in Canada and were completely shafted by CTV Two last night), it’s really in your best interest to stop reading now. Otherwise, prepare to dive in and enjoy!

When it comes to returning cast members on the show, there are a few things that we can confirm already. For one, there will be little to no Joseph Morgan – Claire Holt coverage on the new season, mostly because the two are heading to “The Originals” as series regulars. They could still stop by occasionally, but only if their schedules allow. (The two shows will be filming very close to each other, so you really can’t rule anything out.)

Meanwhile, some of the dead seem to be … well, dead again. Sorry, fans of Matt Davis or Nathaniel Buzolic. We can at least say that Kol probably has a heap of opportunities for flashback appearances in “The Originals” given the history that is there. The one exception to the rule is Steven R. McQueen’s Jeremy, who was revived thanks to Bonnie in the finale. Unfortunately, Bonnie has basically traded placed with him and is doing the dead dance.

The good news here is that thanks to Jeremy’s ability, Bonnie is not exactly gone from the story at all. As a matter of fact, executive producer Julie Plec tells Zap2It that there is a rather unique way in which this character can still be integrated in the story:

“Here’s what I’ll say about Bonnie … I haven’t personally seen Being Human, but I do know that they have a ghost character that operates pretty successfully on that show. This is not the last we’ve seen of Bonnie. If anything, she will be right there in the middle of story next season, just with a few new complications.”

This is not the only “Vampire Diaries” season 5 scoop that we have right now. If you also want to read a little bit more on what happens now with Jeremy, and why he was brought back in the first place, you can read about that over at the link here.

“The Vampire Diaries” has constantly been about ways to try and surprise us with various twists and turns, and with their season 4 finale on Thursday night, they certainly managed to do that and then some. We had Katherine end up taking the cure thanks to the actions of another, Bonnie become a part of the ghost army, Klaus and Caroline have a moment, and the revelation that Stefan is actually a doppelganger for Silas … which is definitely going to create all sorts of interesting problems.

For the sake of this article, though, we plant the focus on a certain character played by one Ian Somerhalder. What becomes of Damon now? While he has been with Elena before, this is arguably one of the first times in his life where he can look at the relationship without suspicion that there is a sire bond or anything else keeping Elena from feeling what she wants to feel.

Speaking to TVLine, executive producer Julie Plec makes it clear that this is in fact an issue that Damon is going to have to deal with very soon on the show, as he finds the confidence within himself in order to be a good partner to someone else:

“Damon’s a character who’s been driven by feeling like he’s not worthy of love. Now that he’s on the receiving end of that love, what will that mean for him? And where will he have to make changes in him, in his behavior? Or will he still be, “I am who I am. You love me for who I am. I’m not going to change for you”? It’ll be a fun dynamic to see him either trying to exercise restraint or not being able to exercise restraint in the name of love of this girl, especially as he’s got a new houseguest. He’s [living] with Jeremy Gilbert as Elena goes off to college.”

In going through some quick-hits on some other important vampire-related topics, here is what we have. It looks as though Katherine is going to continue to be a part of the show now that she is a human, and it is possible that Michael Trevino could also come back, given that he is under contract. However, Tyler has to also decide if he wants to return, given that there is some exciting stuff concerning what he has been up to.

If you want to read some more news on the future of Kat Graham’s Bonnie, we’re also a good source for that.

SPOILER ALERT: Do not read any further if you have yet to watch the season finale of The Vampire Diaries. There are major spoilers ahead, so if you can complain, we will enclose you in a box and send you off the sea. The rest of you can carry on…

Best. Season. Finale. Ever.

Seriously, every other show should just give up after seeing The Vampire Diaries‘ season-four finale, which may have just redefined the word epic. Not only did one of our beloved vamps turn human (Rough twist, Katherine!), but it turns out Elena (Nina Dobrev) isn’t the show’s only doppelgänger: Stefan (Paul Wesley) is big bad Silas’! Oh, and Elena chose to be with Damon (Ian Somerhalder), Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) is alive and Bonnie (Kat Graham) is a ghost. We repeat: All other series’ finales can go shave their backs now.

We chatted exclusively with executive producer/evil genius Julie Plec about the finale’s shocking twists, including the decisions to make Stefan a doppelgänger and turn Katherine human. (Spoiler alert: She wasn’t their first choice!) Plus, she dishes on Delena’s “happy long-distance relationship,” if Kat will be a regular next season and TVD: The college years!

Holy s–t, Stefan is a doppelgänger, Silas’ doppelgänger to be exact! When did you make the decision to bring in another doppelgänger and why Stefan?
Last year after we wrapped season three, some of the writers and I stayed on for an extra five weeks talking about story for season four. We knew that we wanted to give Stefan and give Paul Wesley specifically an opportunity to sort of spread his wings a bit more. He did such a good job playing Ripper Stefan, so we wanted to play a long-foiled plan into motion that we weren’t sure if we’d get to it before the end of the season or not; we always had it in our back pocket to reveal it right around the time it felt right. The way it played out we chose not to reveal it until the last beat of the last episode basically teeing up what season five would be.

We can only imagine how excited Paul Wesley was when he found out about this twist.
Yes, Paul loves to play the bad buy and unfortunately for him, Stefan, more often than not, is a true-blue hero. Obviously, he had this wonderful arc as the Ripper and he’s plagued by his own demons, but when all’s said and done he’s still very much the straight man. Getting the opportunity to dig into this and really stretch and exercise his muscles as an actor I think just made him really happy; it’s exciting for him as an actor to play with a new character.

So will we learn more about the Salvatore family history in season five, maybe about the brothers’ mother?
We’ve just gotten started talking about season five, but one of the things we’re talking about is definitely learning more about the history of the Salvatore family. I would say that at this point the things we don’t know yet are fair game.

Can you tease what Silas will be up to when he’s posing as Stefan in season five?
Silas is going to come roaring into season five with an agenda. His mission has been singular from the beginning, which is he wants to take the cure and die and get rid of the other side so he can pass on and be reunited with his one true love. However, the cure’s off the table, the other side’s off the table, so he’s going to have a pretty enormous plan B for how to deal with that.

As for the other brother, he didn’t get to be a doppelgänger, but he did get the girl! So what’s next for Damon and Elena?
Next for them as a couple is a long-distance relationship as Elena heads off to her new life at college and Damon sticks behind In Mystic Falls to hold down the fort. We get to see them happy, believe it or not, for a little while before of course circumstances and other supernatural influence comes in to drive an obstacle in their path. There’s something that we rarely get to do on TVD, is see a couple enjoy being a couple and we’re definitely going to have our fun with Elena and Damon, who have taken so much time to find their way to each other really and truly. So we’re going to be able to enjoy that for a while.

Katherine being the one to take the cure was also a huge shocker and we heard you originally planned on giving it to another character. Can you say who it was and why the switch?
Interestingly enough, when Kevin [Williamson] and I, back in season zero, when we first launched the series and started talking about knowing that one day we’d make Elena a vampire and with that move would come the realization that there was a cure; I think in the back of our heads we always intended to heal Elena. But the instant that we actually made the decision to move forward with Elena the first thing we realized was she would of course be the one person we couldn’t cure because it was just too easy.

Instantly, we decided that the person that needed to be cured, that made the most sense from a story point of view, that would be a great surprise, would be Damon. We believed that because of all people he’s the one that said he missed being human, but he’s also the one who relished the most being a vampire. Well, about five minutes into the season, right after the cure was revealed to be in existence, I think I read instantly someone was like, ‘Oh, they’re going to cure Damon.’ I thought, ‘Oh shit!’ [Laughs.]

Ultimately, the person that we cured we wanted to get really great story out of it and I think part of Damon’s delightful charm as a vampire is that he is a vampire and I’m not so sure outside of the novelty of turning him human that we’d be able to get as much as we would have wanted to dramatically. We played around with a lot of other ideas for a little while before realizing the answer was so clear and so obvious and so right in front of us.

We’re excited to see a human Katherine in season five; how will that play out?
Katherine is the one person on the planet who would hate to be human more than anything, who’s always been a survivor and so fierce and such a fighter and now she is having to be vulnerable and killable, yet all of her evil deeds of the past coming home to roost. It’s going to be great opportunity for story. Not only is she on the verge of getting her ass kicked every single episode, she’s going to need protection and who better to seek out for protection than the brother Salvatore who have been so good at caring on and off for her over the centuries?

With Bonnie’s death seemingly permanent, is Kat returning a series regular?
Kat will still be a regular, business as usual. She just now has the mother of all obstacles preventing her and Jeremy from being able to have the physical relationship that we’ve danced around for so long.

And finally, what will The Vampire Diaries‘ college years be like?
The best part about it is that we’ve got a town that we’ve very firmly established and the university that we’ve established with Whitmore College, which is not in Mystic Falls, but certainly close enough than you can roll home on a Saturday and do a load of laundry. What’s exciting is to create a whole new world and new characters and new friends and new foes for those who go to college and also be able to integrate what’s going on at college back into what’s going on home, so we never feel like we’ve left behind the Mystic Falls universe we know and love so much.

Going into tonight’s Season 4 finale, “Graduation,” we knew a few things would happen: The gang would graduate, in a poignant scene that celebrated their history together. Elena would, once again, make a choice between Stefan and Damon. One character who had previously died would return from the dead. And, of course, we knew that someone would take the cure for vampirism and turn into a human. But while we were busy asking who would get the cure and who would spend the summer making out with Elena, we kind of forgot about another season-long mystery: Why won’t Silas let anyone see his real face?

The slight of hand gave us one of the most jaw-dropping finale twists ever… and it was just one of many. We spoke with executive producer Julie Plec about what sort of fall-out to expect from some of the most surprising finale reveals when the series returns in Season 5.

1. Silas has a doppelganger – and it’s Stefan. Yes, the Petrova women aren’t the only ones with the doppelganger enchantment in their blood. All of the convoluted twists regarding the legend of Silas, his goals, and his abilities came together. Thanks to a loophole, Silas came back to life, revealing that the immortality spell itself had a loophole: doppelgangers. Silas and Stefan share the same face. Stefan is Silas’ doppelganger, and now he’s trapped in a safe at the bottom of an ocean.

This is a storyline that has been in the works for about a year. “Last year, when Season 3 was over, we kept a small group of writers and we stayed for five weeks, to try to break the broad strokes of Season 4. Last year, right around this time, we came up with the doppelgänger pitch,” executive producer Julie Plec tells us.

There were some complications to introducing another doppelgänger character. In Season 2 and early in Season 3, when Nina Dobrev was playing both Katherine and Elena regularly, she grew worn out, physically. Some of the decision-makers behind “The Vampire Diaries” were concerned that playing two characters could take a similar toll on Paul Wesley.

“We had to convince a lot of different people of how it could work and what could make it work,” Julie says. “So that we didn’t end up in a similar situation as with Katherine and Elena, where we exhausted Nina to the point of being unable to get out of her bed, because we accidentally overworked her so much. Creatively, everybody was very excited about the Silas doppelganger, it was just a matter of how long it took us to cement it, knowing that’s fundamentally what we’re going to do.”

At the moment, Paul’s not concerned about working too hard — he’s just excited to face a new challenge on the show. “He is so happy,” Julie laughs. “Playing the straight man hero is not always the most exciting job for an actor, and Stefan, of all our heroes, is the straightest on the show. We get to go deeper into his ripper side sometimes, but for Paul, those moments are just pocket moments of opportunity to dig deeply into his craft, and a lot of other times he feels like he’s just grooming his hero hair. So obviously, he’s very enthusiastic about this, and has been supportive of it all along. He’s been dying for something; to be a jerk, to be evil, to be the bad guy, to be able to stretch his muscles.”

And in Season 5, he definitely will.

2. The resurrection of Jeremy Gilbert: “Vampire Diaries” fans are used to characters dying — and occasionally, they pop back up later, whether it’s as a vampire or as a ghost. Still, we were (pleasantly!) surprised to learn that Jeremy was coming back from the grave permanently, particularly because his goodbye episode was so heart-wrenching. Didn’t the writers worry that resurrecting him would dull the impact of his beautiful, memorable send-off?

“It’s something that we talked about a lot,” Julie says. “Our intention, originally, was to say goodbye [to Jeremy] permanently. But then a lot of questions came up about the power of this girl losing her only living relative. It was so important to her journey at that moment. The global, eternally reaching tragedy attached to that is really sad, and really depressing.”

Though Jeremy had to die in order to push Elena into the next phase of her life as a vampire, the writers quickly realized that it’d be impossible to bring her back from that dark, desperately tragic point in her life unless they revived Jeremy. Without him, Elena was looking down a long, black tunnel of depression — and that wouldn’t make for a particularly lively Season 5.

“We argued a lot, in the writer’s room — could we successfully bring this character back in a way that wouldn’t feel cheap? Ultimately, I think that the way that it plays out, it does feel like the natural gift at the end of the season for this character that has been through so much,” she explains.

Now Elena has a chance at some happiness in Season 5. “[Getting Jeremy back] resets her, in a way, where she can now get on with her life and live like the Elena that we know,” Julie says. She is cautious, because she knows that some viewers might not be pleased with the loophole Jeremy steps through to return to the land of the living. “Critically, you can look at something and go, ‘Well, that’s a take-back, it’s not fair,’ but emotionally, I think, it’s a positive. We might get hammered for it. We’ll see. I’m hoping people will be so glad to see our Elena pull her life back together, they’ll accept it.”

3. Bonnie will still factor in to the storylines. Jeremy didn’t exactly get a free ride back to the land of the living. Bonnie sacrificed herself in order to bring him back for Elena, and now she’s trapped beyond the veil — invisible to everyone, except for Jeremy.

It’s certainly a tragic loss, but don’t worry, Bonnie fans. Kat Graham will still be a big part of the show. “Here’s what I’ll say about Bonnie: I haven’t personally seen ‘Being Human,’ but I do know that they have a ghost character that operates pretty successfully on that show,” Julie says. “This is not the last we’ve seen of Bonnie. If anything, she will be right there in the middle of story next season, just with a few new complications.”

4. Delena goodness! By giving Jeremy his life back, Bonnie essentially gave Elena her life back, too. Unencumbered by the sire bond, her grief, or a gaping hole where her humanity should be, Elena finally got to evaluate her love life with a clear head — and she chose to be with Damon. “In death, you’re the one that made me feel most alive,” Elena told him. Cue the mouth touching! Now, with her vampire boyfriend at her side, she might just be able to enjoy college.

It’s been a rough few years for Damon when it comes to his love life — but Julie tells us it’s finally time for him to have some legitimate joy in his life. “Yes. Absolutely,” she says. “We’re going to get to see Damon trying to be a good boyfriend, and while it’s not going to be easy, he’s going to try like hell to make it work, and they’re going to have a real opportunity for happiness.”

5. And what about Katherine? This season, we’ve seen a much more vulnerable side of Miss Katerina Petrova. She spent most of the year on the run. When she finally opened up and fell for Elijah, he rejected her in favor of a new beginning with his family. And then, in a moment of weakness, she allowed Elena to get the upper hand in a major showdown in the high school hallways. Elena, driven by very human emotions, shoved the cure down Katherine’s throat. The thing that Katherine fears most is mortality. Elena gave it to her.

Just don’t expect Katherine to go all Elena on us now that she doesn’t have to drink blood to stay alive. “As a human, she’s still very, very bad,” Julie laughs. “If anything, she feels silly for letting herself get vulnerable, and she’s taking out that frustration of her own vulnerability on Elena. If Elena goes after her, Katherine’s still ready to kick that puppy.”

Aw! So cute! The Vampire Diaries’Candice Accola (Caroline Forbes) and her boyfriend, The Fray’s Joe King, made a special treat for fans in honor of tonight’s Season 4 finale.

If you’re no longer in your teens, you probably remember Vitamin C’s “Graduation (Friends Forever)” song. No? Let us remind you: “As we go on, we remember / All the times we had together / And as our lives change, come whatever / We will still be friends forever.”

So profound. The song was obviously influential for Candice, who recorded her own version along with her musician BF. Candice is a singer in her own right and once toured with Miley Cyrus.

“In honor of Mystic Falls Class of 2013, @joekingofficial and I recorded something for you all! http://smarturl.it/Candice-Graduation … #nostalgiaAtItsBest,” she tweeted, along with the link to the song on iTunes. “now All I need is orange hair and a belly shirt,” she added, referring to Vitamin C’s signature locks and ‘90s-tastic ensemble.

Having just downloaded it, we can attest it’s spectacular.

We’ll just play it on repeat until Season 4, Episode 23, “Graduation” airs tonight.

The CW’s Fall 2013 schedule will see some changes from the 2012-2013 season. The network has decided to not give vampire fans a full two-hour block, opting to air The Vampire Diaries and its spin-off The Originals on different nights.

Arrow and Vampire Diaries will be used to launch new shows. On Wednesdays, the superhero series will be the lead-in for The Tomorrow People, which stars Robbie Amell in a group of humans who represent the next stage of our evolution, notes EW. Vampire diaries will be the lead-in for Reign on Thursdays. That features Adelaide Kane and tells the story of Mary Queen of Scots as a young girl.

In an interesting choice, The Carrie Diaries was scheduled for Fridays and will be paired withAmerican’s Next Top Model.

HitFix notes that the CW has decided to start its fall shows in October, as is the network’s usual move. That way, the shows don’t get lost in the shuffle of premieres on NBC, CBS, ABC and Fox.

Here’s the full schedule (*new shows):

Mondays:
8-9: Hart of Dixie
9-10: Beauty and the Beast

Tuesdays:
8-9: The Originals*
9-10: Supernatural

The Hollywood Reporter: The Originals episode has been on the books for a while. What are your thoughts on Vampire Diaries fans finally getting the chance to see the potential new series?
Claire Holt: Of course. I was beyond excited to be able to continue this journey as Rebekah and continue working with Daniel [Gillies], Joseph and [executive producer] Julie [Plec]. It’s been a process; it’s been a long time coming. I’m very excited to see the hard work pay off.

THR: We saw a glimpse of Klaus in New Orleans, so how does Rebekah play into that world?
Holt: In The Originals, she’s faced with the decision to follow her brother or stay in Mystic Falls. She’s always been loyal to Klaus and she values family above all else, and I think it’s a really hard one for her because she has been betrayed by him, she is disappointed in him and is hurting still. That journey in this pilot will revolve around her decision to follow him, help him and remain loyal to the family or leave them behind.

THR: Will we see her in New Orleans at some point?
Holt: I’m not sure that’s something I can give away. There will definitely be conversations with Elijah about whether or not Rebekah will come and join them. I don’t think I can tell you whether she makes it or not.

THR: The Matt (Zach Roerig) and Rebekah dynamic was revisited again in last week’s prom episode. How does that relationship progress in the rest of the season?
Holt: I know Rebekah’s been pursuing that for a really long time: The girl doesn’t give up! I don’t think she’s going to give up any time soon. It develops into a nice friendship, I think, after the prom episode. She really behaved in a way he thought was admirable. I think that it’s now going to blossom a little. Whether he decides he can forgive her for all the things she’s done wrong, that remains to be seen. I hope they get together. I think that they’re a really great couple.

THR: So you’re saying Matt and Rebekah could continue?
Holt: I think so. If she continues on the path that she’s on, she has a chance with him. I think she’s learning she can’t always get what she wants all the time and behave however she feels. She’s really growing up, which is nice, and hopefully that will transition into The Originals, where she will be able to explore that side of her on the new show.

THR: Have you had conversations with Julie about having Rebekah appear in both Vampire Diaries and the spinoff should it go to series?
Holt: That’s definitely a possibility. I’d love for that to be an option for Rebekah and for all the characters. I think there’s an appetite for the two shows together so that it won’t be disjointed and will be able to benefit from the popularity of, hopefully, both the shows if [The Originals] gets picked up. Julie’s really trying to allow for that. It would be great for us if it’s something we can manage.

THR: How would you describe the season finale?
Holt: I read the last two scripts of the season and I was almost overwhelmed by the scale of them, so I think the fans are going to be very happy with what happens. A lot of characters are involved, a lot of history and there’s a shocker at the end as well. It’ll tie up loose ends regarding the cure, where the characters go and Rebekah’s journey as well.

THR: Rebekah was desperately seeking the cure so she can be human, but now that Silas is in possession of the cure, how does that complicate matters for her?
Holt: Rebekah is going to end up satisfied with the outcome. It may not be what she wanted but she has to realize that there is beauty in everything and she has to look at the bright side of things. Whether she becomes human or remains a vampire, Matt’s helping her to be comfortable with herself and learn to be happy with what she has. That’s sort of the outcome for the race for the cure, I think.

THR: What’s the likelihood that someone will take the cure by season’s end?
Holt: We learn it’s less about becoming human and more about how we feel about ourselves as characters. Each of the regulars of Mystic Falls really has to ask themselves the question: Do I want this? Am I happy with who I am? Do I want this for someone else? Am I happy with who they are? That’s what it all boils down to. This race for the cure is leaving the characters to re-evaluate their lives and that’s what’s important.

THR: Describe a scene or moment that we should look out for.
Holt: There comes a moment in time when Rebekah truly decides what she wants from her life and there’s a lot of craziness surrounding the decision, but she learns to be happy and puts other people first. That’s going to be a pivotal moment in the story line and leading into the spinoff, potentially she’ll take those character traits with her, I hope.

THR: How do you think fans will react to Thursday’s episode?
Holt: I hope they love it! I want to have a job. [Laughs] The production value is incredible, the acting is incredible, the story is incredible. There are so many things to love about this backdoor pilot and I think it’s going to be great and I sure hope it is.

Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder‘s showmance is over. The Vampire Diaries costars, who play Elena Gilbert and Damon Salvatore on the CW hit series, have called it quits after more than three years of dating, a source tells Us Weekly exclusively.

The couple, who first took their romance public in 2011, are “consummate professionals,” the insider says, and “will continue to work together and remain best friends, which is where the relationship started.”

Last fall, Dobrev opened up to Seventeen magazine about falling for Somerhalder. “I didn’t want to be dating one of my costars — my goal on the show was to be professional,” she admitted. “But sometimes you can’t help who you have a connection with, and you can only fight it for so long — which I did for a really, really long time.”

The Vampire Diaries is currently in its fourth season on the CW. In February, the network renewed the supernatural drama for a fifth season. Filming will begin later this year; in the meantime, Dobrev, 24, will spend the summer shooting the Fox movie Let’s Be Cops, which also stars New Girl‘s Jake Johnson and Happy Endings‘ Damon Wayans Jr.

Reps for the actors declined to comment on the split.
